Who we are.
Building upon the teachings of Jim Wise, who along with such greats as William H. Macy and David Mamet helped forge the Practical Aesthetic acting technique, we seek to share a new perspective. Our motto is simple: invent nothing, deny nothing, a motto equally applicable to life and theatre.
We have witnessed this art and craft's ability to build a person’s confidence, to allow one to awaken dormant talents and cherish their own uniqueness. We wish to share this method with others through professional training and stage productions.
What's in a name?
Room 6 was a shabby little basement studio where we spent hours immersed in the world of acting; melding the methods of Stanislavsky, Meisner and Mamet. We explored the range of human experience and emotion by challenging our own beliefs and norms and came to understand what theatre arts can do and how the craft can change a person from the inside out.
We dedicate this company to the room that changed us. May we do the same for you, our students and audiences.
Mission
ROOM6 Theatre serves the Philadelphia community by producing relevant, thought-provoking plays that are inspired by a unique artistic vision. We undertake the challenging mission of providing raw, provocative, and sometimes controversial work in order to provide a safe place for active exchanges about important social, moral and political issues while nurturing artistic risk and growth.
ROOM6 feels that education is the key to such growth. We provide intensive acting training at reasonable rates, because we feel everyone should have the opportunity to explore themselves and their community through the mind-opening medium of the theatre.
Kevin Murphy
Artistic Director
Kevin received his BFA in Acting from UCSB, one of only two programs in California that offered the degree. There he acquired the tools that every actor needs: a strong foundation in voice (Linklater, IPA), movement (James Donlon) and a basic approach to actingmostly in the tradition of Stanislavsky and Stella Adler. After graduating he spent a decade in the real world, performing in theatres from New York to Los Angeles. In 2004 he attended Penn State University for his MFA. There he learned how to take his voice and movement training and relate it to a method of acting that changed his life. Now he is dedicated to this method and bringing it to light in Philadelphia's theatre community.
Amelia Nutter
Managing Director
After graduating Penn State University with her BA in acting Amelia moved to Philadelphia with hopes of starting her own theatre company. Very simply, this is the beginning of that dream.
